The housing choice voucher program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants can find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.
Housing choice vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies (PHAs). The PHAs receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program. Since the demand for housing assistance often exceeds the limited resources available to HUD and the local housing agencies, long waiting periods are common. In fact, a PHA may close its waiting list when it has more families on the list than can be assisted in the near future.
The Housing Authority of Cochise County (HACC) closed the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list in January 2020 and no new applicants have been able to apply for the program in Cochise County since then. The waiting list was re-opened on February 1, 2024 and it was originally announced that the list would be closed on February 23. Today’s update is to announce that this deadline has now been extended to 5:00pm on March 1, 2024.
Fillable online applications are available at https://www.cochise.az.gov/housing-authority/home (please click on “Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Wait List Pre-Application”). Applications must be received no later than 5:00pm on March 1, 2024 and can be mailed or dropped off in person, sent online via the web site or faxed to (520) 432-8890.
Members of the public can reach HACC by phone at (520) 432-8880 or can visit the offices in person in Bisbee or Douglas.
