An agricultural site previously used to grow fruit, flowers and vegetables will be converted to cultivate medical marijuana.
The facility, located at E. Gaskill Road, Willcox, will not include any dispensary services.
The application by Peoria-based Green Desert Patient Center was unanimously approved by the Cochise County Planning & Zoning Commission at its monthly meeting on April 12. The County received six letters in support of the development, and three in opposition.
The company plans to produce raw and unprocessed cannabis plant material in secured greenhouses, which will be transported to an off-site processing facility.
Development Services staff said there would be no discernable changes to the site, located about five miles east of Kansas Settlement Road. The facility sits in a rural area surrounded mainly by agricultural and vacant parcels.
The existing greenhouses and buildings will be used by the applicant, but new security measures will be introduced, including cameras, fencing, and secured access.
Up to 20 jobs are anticipated to be created when the operation has been fully built out.
